Lofoten is located at the 67th and 68th parallels, it is Norway beyond the Arctic Circle, which Norway is famous for its great nature.
The total area of the archipelago is 1227 km², the population is 24,500. Lofoten is separated from the mainland by the wide open Vestfjord, with Vesterolen to the north. The main towns in Lofoten are Leknes (Leknes, Vestvojøj) and Svolvær (Svolvær, Vogane (Vågan)). The Lofoten Islands are characterized by mountains, steep bays, a long sea coastline and large untouched areas. The highest mountain in Lofoten is 1161 m high Higravstinden (Higravstinden) in Austvojøy. Located northeast of Lofoten in Mioysalen National Park is a mountain reaching 1,262 m. West Lofoten is home to the famous Moskstraumen tidal eddy system, commonly known as Malstrøm and the source of the generic term maelstrom for such a system. The sea near Lofoten is rich in life. 110 km west of Riosto is a large deep-sea coral reef, located 300-400 m, about 35 km long and 3 km wide.[1] In Lofoten, there are a lot of sea eagles and cormorants, many other sea birds.
